Here are some of the spots you must visit when in Maastricht:

1. The Bonnefanten Museum – This museum has a substantial collection of both old and modern arts in Limburg. It is placed in a strikingly styled building on Avenue Ceramique 250 and is open from Tuesday through Sunday between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

2. Vrijthof Square – This plaza offers one of the best and simplest ways to sightsee. It is a real medieval labyrinth. Admission is free and is open daily.

3. Onze Lieve Vrouweplein – Near the Our Beloved Lady Church, this is where you can find countless cafes that will satiate your every craving.

4. Markt—The Market Square, where you can see a number of prominent landmarks like the Stadhuis (City Hall) built around the 17th century, originally as a cloth hall. Open every day and admission is free.

5. St. Pietersberg – Where the old fortress is. In here you will find lime stone catacombs where Napoleon carved his name in one of the soft rocks. Open daily. Free admission. Guided tours are also available for the tunnels.

6. St. Servaasbasiliek – This is a basilica that dates back as far as the sixth century, although it has gone through some repairs and renovation. This is the oldest church in the whole Netherlands. Attractions here are the gothic architecture, an elaborate entrance adorned with numerous statues, and a treasury room. This is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This is open daily from April to October (10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), while only on Sundays from November till March (10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m).

7. Helpoort -- Hell’s Gate. This is the oldest surviving town gate built about 800 years ago, along with a wide, extended city wall. Fortifications were added in the 15th century. These days, The Hell’s Gate is a hub to a priceless collection of local history. If you are willing to climb to the top of the tower itself, some excellent views may be seen, like the number of historical landmarks nearby. It is open daily from 1:30 p.m. till 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

8. River Maas – Cruises by boat along the River Maas are offered. The cruise will pass a number of the hottest attractions in the city. During peak season, a day-long return trips to Liege, Belgium are very popular. Walking tours are also available from July till August.

9. Natuurhistorisch Museum – Located at De Bosquetplein 7, Maastricht's Natural History Museum exhibits the geological development of South Limburg. It is home to numerous fossils and different types of rock. There is also a section showing the regional flora and fauna.
