Steenkolenmijn
This museum provides a unique and mysterious underground experience for anyone who will visit it. Steenkolenmijn will unravel a world of mining in an underground environment. The visit will be quite informative as a film from a 1966 show will be presented to share a lot of wonderful facts about mining. After the film showing, a former miner will serve as the guide to your coal extraction experience and tour around the museum. Galleries reveal how the workers transport, extract, and deal with coals and mines.

Krestmarkt
Christmas shops and markets may be the norm in Germany, but Valkenburg gives this experience a more favorable touch. Markets are held in the cave extensions that flow under the surrounding hills of the town – this is what makes shopping here quite unique. You may find the narrow tunnels crowded due to a number of visitors, and the wares may be not as extraordinary as a tourist might expect, but nonetheless, this experience is not one to miss. Just be ready to pay a little amount of around three to six euros for the entrance fee.

Castle Rock
The richness of the middle ages can come to life once again by just visiting the remains of the ruined castle of the lords. ‘Dwingelrots,’ as it is most commonly known in the town, is considered as an archeological site that has a lot to tell about Valkenburg’s past. Monumental remains and a secret passage that leads into the caves below are among the enchanting things that can be found here. The view from this place on the hilltop is also quite magnificent.

In the center of the castle ruins is a bird show. Owls, falcons, and hawks are presented in this gorgeous site. Taking a picture with these impressive birds in such a beautiful area would be a great way to end the experience.

Fluweengrot
Limburg’s oldest marlstone caves or ‘Mergelgrotten’ is another great place to visit in this town. Get to experience the days of the knights and princesses as you walk through the labyrinth of old, whimsical tunnels that once served as a secret passage into the castle and as an advantageous fortress during battles.

Discovered just in 1937, the tunnels resulted from marlstone formation. The mudstone which is rich in lime and calcium carbonate contain a great amount of aragonite and clay. It is assumed that the formation took place at around 11th or 12th century. The marls or mudstones found in these caves are said to be used as brick stones for constructing structures like the great castle of Valkenburg.

Interesting carvings and charcoal drawings that tell stories and legends of the past can also be found in these mystical caves.
