The Netherlands is a country that is rich in natural beauty. The land lies below sea level and many of the areas in the country are protected using sea walls and dykes and some of the land has been reclaimed from the sea, the example being that of Flevoland Polder.
In the past the people were known to the outside world as the Dutch, and later the name became Holland. The Dutch were a seafaring and adventurous people and like the British, the Portuguese and the Spaniards; they too set out to conquer the world. But the recent history of the country is that of a peace-loving nation and the International Court of Justice has its headquarters in the country.
